Hand Seal Guide:
Hand seals are as important as Chakra in Naruto. All GenJutsu and NinJutsu need hand seals to be performed, but TaiJutsu doesn't because it simply needs no Chakra. The main function of a Hand Seal is similar to that of magic words. Instead of speaking of words to activate a spell, Hand Seals are used to activate the technique, and release all the gathered Chakra. Hand Seals stand out for animals, specifically the animals found in the Oriental Zodiac signs. That's why there are 12 seals, one for each of the 12 years found in Oriental zodiacs.

This is because if the hand seals in a NinJutsu are not performed correctly, the Chakra will be released wrong and a different effect will occur, probably failing the Jutsu. As a result, Hand Seals need a lot of concentration, which is why techniques in Naruto cannot be interrupted, or the technique will definately fail. In the lines below, we have gathered images of all of the most frequent hand seals.

The hand seals in the Naruto series are based off of the Oriental Zodiac system. As you may have heard when someone talks about what year they are born in, they may say year of the Dragon, which means they would have been born in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976 or 1988. Below we have organized the hand seals in order of when they appear in the Chinese zodiac, from one to twelve.

The Chuunin Exams
The Chuunin exam is a test which is held twice every year to determine which Genins, from all around the world, are at the required skill level to become a Chuunin; as long as they have completed a minimum of 8 missions, they may enter the exam.

However, it is also held as a replacement for war amongst the Hidden Villages. Once, many great Shinobi countries were at war with each other, and many Ninja were killed as a consequence. So, the Chuunin exam was divised as way for civilians, country lords, and peoples from places without Ninja Villages to see the mightiest of the villages, and therefore, the country whose Ninja perform the best would, in theory, gain the most new and continued custom. Therefore, it is in a Village's best interest for their Shinobi to do well, as it will mean an increase in customers; and, it is of course, in the Shinobi's best interest to do well, as it will mean a promotion to a higher rank.

The country where the exam is held varies every event (however, this section will be mostly concerned with the one in Leaf Village, in which Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are participants.) Usually, the country that is hosting the event has more participants than any other. Ninjas from other Hidden Village must carry a pass with them at all times when wandering the village they are participating in.

The exam held in the Leaf Village is normally split into 3 parts; a paper test consisting of 10 questions; a race to the middle of "the Forest of Death" after fighting at least one team of opponents for their scroll; a tournament where all of the entrants fight and show their abilities. The first two are conducted one after another but the third is held a month after the completion of the second. However, if there are too many people that complete the first and second test, a set of preliminaries will be held to thin out the numbers for the real third test. In these preliminaries, each Ninja will fight a random opponent until half, or less, people are remaining.

Also, there is one more rule that applies to the exam: fighting without the consent and authorisation of the examiners or testing officers is not permitted. And if permission to fight your opponent is given, killing them is not tolerated unless otherwise stated. However, this rule does not apply for the second and third test.

Logos and Symbols

Symbol of the Leaf Village which appears on all Leaf Head Protecters, and many items of apparel. It also appears on the wooden gates of the Village and the Ninja Academy amoungst other places.
Another symbol of the Leaf, this appears on all Chuunin and Jounin uniforms, both on the back of the jacket and on the upper arm. Other ninjas also have the symbol on their clothing.
This symbol appears on the sleeves of Hinata, Choji and Kiba. This face made of Japanese characters is most commonly adopted by Kakashi. He has a picture of it on the wall above his bed and all of his nin-dogs wear cloaks with this symbol on.
This badge appears on Konohamaru's hat. Found on the front of Kankuro's shirt.
Found on the back of the come-come paradise books, presumably as a deterant for younger readers. The symbol of the Uchiha Clan. This fan appears on the back on the Uchiha shirts, amoungst other items of apparel unique to the clan.
